The Beginner’s Guide to Buying Your First Caravan

Posted on February 13, 2013

Caravans are an excellent investment whether you’re a young couple looking to travel, a family or a retired couple, they can be the perfect addition to your lives. But if you’re a first time buyer looking to purchase a second hand caravan it can sometimes seem like a minefield.

Here at The Caravan Company we have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to both buying and selling caravans so we’ve put together some top tips on what to consider when buying your first caravan:

What Size Caravan?

You need to decide how big you need your caravan to be, will it just be you travelling as a couple or will you have children or friends with you too? It’s also important to consider how often you will use your caravan – are you planning on taking regular trips away or will it be used for the odd weekend in the summer?

If you plan to use your caravan on a regular basis then you may want to opt for a larger, twin axle caravan. This will mean you have more space for luggage as well as additional guests or even pets. If you only plan to use your caravan for the odd short trip it may be better to look into something a little smaller, a single axle caravan that will be easier to tow and cheaper to insure.

What to Look For?

One thing you need to be aware of when looking for second hand caravans is what you need to look out for. You need to check for wear and tear and any potential problems that could arise.

One major thing you should check for is damp as this could well mean there are leaks in the caravan. The most common places where leaks can occur are around the windows, the roof and the wheel arches.

Specifications:

When looking for your first caravan you should also consider what appliances and specifications you would like. In modern caravans the specifications have generally become more comprehensive and you should expect to find things like:
• Hot water system with a shower
• Cassette toilet
• Oven
• Fridge
• Heater
• Mains electricity

When looking at caravans don’t be afraid to check that all the appliances are in full working order, after all you wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it!
